Landscape with False Memory sets solo guitar against a string quartet in a single nine-and-a-half-minute span. The work grows from a remembered summer morning in rural Pennsylvania — a grandmother, a bucket of blackberries, an Appalachian ballad, and a black bear rising from the bushes — and from the composer's realization that the memory, shared by several grandchildren, may never have been his own. The music moves between bright, rippling guitar figuration and broad string writing, passing through a series of tonal regions before arriving at a solo cadenza for the guitarist and a closing return to stillness.
